Octomore Series 16: Bruichladdich Unveils the 2025 Lineup

Bruichladdich has unveiled the new Octomore Series 16, the latest release in the “The Impossible Equation” line, which continues to push the limits of peat, strength and cask influence. The 2025 series is made up of four expressions: 16.1, 16.2, 16.3 and the upcoming 16.4, scheduled for November. All whiskies are non-chill filtered, naturally coloured, and entirely conceived, distilled and bottled on Islay.

Octomore 16.1

The 16.1 is the foundation of the range: made from 100% Scottish Concerto barley, peated to 101.4 PPM and matured for 5 years exclusively in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels. Bottled at 59.3%. Official notes: salted caramel, melon, apricot, followed by chocolate and coconut over a mineral and smoky backbone. Indicative price: ~€159.99 in Europe / $204.99 in the US.

Octomore 16.2

Made from the same distillate as 16.1 (101.4 PPM; 5 years old), but with a distinctive cask journey: maturation in Oloroso and Bordeaux casks, followed by a finish in Madeira and Moscatel. Bottled at 58.1%, it brings burnt caramel, dried fruits and layered smoky sweetness. Indicative price: ~€169.99 in Europe / $244.99 in the US.

Octomore 16.3

The 16.3 is the expression with the strongest sense of terroir: barley grown in a single field (Church Field) at the historic Octomore Farm near the distillery, then malted in Inverness. It is also the most heavily peated, at 189.5 PPM. Matured in a mix of bourbon, Sauternes and Pedro Ximénez casks, and bottled at 61.6%. Indicative price: ~€220 in Europe / $279.99 in the US.

Octomore 16.4

The 16.4, arriving in November, uses the same heavily peated distillate (189.5 PPM) but adds a period in virgin French oak (medium/medium+ toast) after an initial maturation in second-fill bourbon. Bottled at 62.6%, it will be available exclusively online and at the distillery from 4 November.

Prices and Availability

The 16.1–16.3 are already available through official channels and selected retailers. European pricing ranges from €160 to €220, while US listings run from $204.99 to $279.99. All expressions are non-chill filtered and naturally coloured. The 16.4 will follow in November as a dedicated release.

Which One to Choose?

The 16.1 is the classic reference point, ideal for understanding Octomore’s structure. The 16.2 delivers the greatest cask-driven complexity. The 16.3 is made for those who want the strongest link to Islay along with the highest peat level. The 16.4 will be the rarest, thanks to its time in virgin French oak. A few months after the announcement, we published an in-depth guide to the differences between all four expressions.

Why Octomore Remains Unique

Octomore has always embodied a fascinating paradox: young age (5 years), near cask-strength bottling and extremely high PPM levels should in theory create overwhelming profiles. Yet, through precise cask management and exacting cuts, these whiskies manage to deliver balanced intensity and depth, making Octomore a symbol of Bruichladdich’s experimental philosophy.
