Caol Ila 1983 Rare Series: 42 Years Old, 318 Bottles

caol ila 42 years old - 1983 vintage

Diageo has one of the rarest Caol Ila bottlings in years in the pipeline: the Caol Ila 1983 Rare Series, a single malt distilled in 1983 and aged 42 years, bottled in 2026. No official announcement from Diageo yet, but details of the release are already known.

Update 27 March 2026 — Justerini & Brooks, Diageo’s distributor, has launched a landing page for the “Rare Series” under the tagline “Scattered Treasures of Scotland”. Among the teaser images, one is clearly shot from Caol Ila distillery, with the Paps of Jura on the horizon, and the series logo (a circular crosshair) matches the one on the bottle’s label. The official launch has not yet taken place: those wishing to be notified can register their interest at justerinis.com/rare-series.

Release Details

Caol Ila 1983 Rare Series is bottled at 56.4% vol., with a run of just 318 bottles at 700 ml. No pricing or distribution details have been confirmed. Those who know the Caol Ila 12 Year Old as the distillery’s core range benchmark will understand this is a different category entirely.

Maturation and Casks

The whisky matured in American oak casks, then married in European oak puncheons. The only descriptor is “Rounded Power.” No PPM figures or individual cask details are disclosed.

This would be the oldest Caol Ila ever officially bottled by Diageo: the 2014 Special Release was a 30-year-old, the 2018 Special Release a 35-year-old. At 42 years and only 318 bottles, this sits firmly in collector territory, comparable to Diageo’s Prima & Ultima tier. One to watch for pricing and availability updates.
